Brilliant Innings ending in defeat -II

Mahela Jayawardene- 103* vs India, Mumbai, World Cup Final, 2011

The celebrations were a bit premature

Possibly the innings that deserved the trophy the most. It was an innings made of dreams. Jayawardene walked into a packed Wankhede Stadium determined to lay his hands on the World Cup but had to leave empty handed. After Sangakkara had elected to bat, Mahela walked in to join him with the score on 60-2. He left the stadium to rapturous applause three hours later after scoring a beautiful century. He would not be denied that honour as he cut, drove and flicked his way to three figures. His wife though, could not bear to watch. After Sangakkara departed, he led the slog over assault and guided Sri Lanka to an imposing 276-4. It would not be enough to deny a determined Indian side to victory. They chased the score down with nearly four overs to spare thanks largely to nineties from Gautam Gambhir and M.S. Dhoni who finished it off in style. It would be Sri Lanka's third straight loss in a World Cup final.
